I am a Bengali and growing up in a Bengali household, I have learned that Gurer Narkel Naru is what we Bengali's make during Janmasthami. Apart from that, nowadays, it's also made for other festivals and occasions. Gurer Narkel Naru is nothing but Coconut Jaggery Ladoos. The unique factor is the use of Nolen Gur or Date Palm Jaggery, which is only found in winters, but we buy it and store it all year to be used for these recipes. Narkel Naru Recipe is basically the same as that of Nariyal Ladoo, except that we Bengalis use Gur or Jaggery in place of Sugar to make these Naru or Ladoos. Ingredients for Narkel Naru
- Desiccated Coconut: 1/2 cup
- Chopped Cashew Nut: 1/2 cup
- Cardamom Powder - 1/4th tsp
- Ghee - 3-4 tsp
- Gur - 1 cup(Prefer Nolen Gur or Date Palm Jaggery; although it's optional. you can use regular Sugarcane Jaggery as well)
Method of making Homemade Nariyal Ladoos for Diwali
- First of all, you will have to take dessicated coconut and roast them in ghee.
- Do not overcook them, as they get burnt very quickly.
- Turn off the flames.
- Now, melt the Gur (Jaggery) in a wok over medium flame.
- After it melts, take a spoon and throw away the upper layer of dirt from the Gur.
- Now, Mix the roasted coconuts with the Gur.
- Keep stirring for some time and then put out the fire.
- Allow it to cool down for some time.
- Grease your palms with ghee and make your Narkel Narus.
- Make small lemon sized balls and seal the mouth with a cashew nut piece.
- Once finished, you can decorate it with some more desiccated coconuts and some rose petals.
- Serve it for festivals to your family and friends and enjoy it's delightful taste.
