Lisbon is the capital of Portugal, it is a global city and one of the most visited cities in southern Europe. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe even predating Rome, Paris and London. In fact many historians date it almost four centuries back to Rome. It is the second oldest city after Athens. It is believed that it was settled by Phoenicians around 1200 BC and they had used the river Tagus for transportation and named the city Lisbon which translates to “safe harbour” in Phoenician. São Jorge, São Vicente, São Roque, Santo André, Santa Catarina, Chagas and Sant’Ana arethe seven hills that make this city the city of seven hills. Raven is the symbol of Lisbon and they are fondly known as Vincent after they followed Saint Vincent of Saragossa, from Cape Saint Vincent to Lisbon. The Vasco da GamaBridge in here is the longest bridge in Europe. You may visit the city for its rich cultural heritage and historical diversity. - Galerias Romanas: Translated as an underground roman gallery, this gallery is said to be a portico crypt of Augustus from 1st century BC to 1st century AD. It is very difficult to access it as it is located underground and you have to practically go down a hole in the middle of the street amidst the traffic. It is only open in September and has a long queue before you enter inside but a visit here shall be worth your time in Lisbon. It is located in Rua da prate in Lisbon’s downtown area.
- Lisbon Oceanarium: A beautiful place and one of the oldest places in Lisbon dated back to mid-1800s and has now moved to a new building. It houses many exotic and interesting marine species and floras in its aquariums. The place is easily accessible and totally worth your time. It’ll help you rejuvenate and be close to nature after the day’s storm.
- Jeronimos Monastery: A truly picturesque place and very easily accessible. This UNESCO World Heritage site in near Tagus River. It previously was a church which was later turned into a monastery.it is very well maintained. It has a beautiful architecture that’ll instantly grip you.
- Alfama: A great city that survived the great earthquake that shattered everything in 1755. To consume the culture, walk through the city. It has narrow alleys which are filled with cafes and restaurants if you want to munch on snacks on your trip. It is a beautiful old town. Go back in time wandering through the narrow alleys amidst locals and cool breeze of Tagus River and Fado music. You can also see the gorgeous sunset here from one of the viewing points seeing the red rooftops and River Tejo.
- Chiado: A very chic place in the heart of old Lisbon bustling with high-end shopping squares cafes, restaurants, and shops. It is also home to famous Portuguese poet statue- Fernando Pessoa. It is a famous tourist destination and just next to it is Bairro Alto which is filled with bars and restaurants for a cool nightlife.
