There is no profession which can match up to the hard work our moms do for us. They are our superwoman, who organizes every little thing from our lives to the home of her life, without complaining. I don’t live with my mom anymore. But whenever I go back home during college vacations I see turn a bit older than the last time I visited her.
It itches within me to do something for her so that she feels worthy and more alive with me. So this time, I thought why not renovate her favorite room in the home. What else could that be apart from the kitchen? So I found that storage is a major issue in our kitchen. She was complaining that it’s never enough. However many cabinets you install, they still seem less to accommodate all the things required in the kitchen.
So after doing some steady planning and thinking I came up with some clever hacks and quirky DIYs which I’ll share with y’all which just elevated our kitchen from ordinary to extraordinary, precious & warm little bistro.
Clever hacks & DIYs to make space and organize Kitchen
#1. Quirky knife block:
Knives are the most important cookware in our kitchens. If you are looking for a good quality knife, then you can buy the best edc knife which is the best option that fits according to your budget to use for cutting and peeling fruit during your lunch breaks. Ask your mom and she knows her cutleries really well, especially her knives. And most importantly, as my mom says, we all are accustomed to a particular knife and prefer to use only that one, for the right pressure and correct sharpness. But storing those in knife blocks makes them eventually lose their sharpness. So what I did was, just take a spare glass. Then I filled it with colorful pulses and Indian lentils. I used pink, brown, and yellow lentils, and green grams, along with a handful of unused rice, and used it to store knives.
This is how I did it:
- First, take a glass which is unused and clean it
- Fill it with colorful lentils, pulses, and rice, layer by layer.
- Finish it off till the rim and push in your knives.
This shall ensure its sharp edges forever and keep them from rusting and losing its sharpness.
#2. Oven mittens for holding spatulas:
This is an easy and clever DIY trick. You must have old or unused oven mittens at home. Just wash them properly and dry them out before use. Now simply put in your spatulas in it and hand it on the walls. This ensures that all your spatulas are all in one place and you do not need to wrack your brains finding the correct one while cooking.
#3. Reuse old chopping boards:
We all have old worn out chopping boards at home. Here is a quirky DIY to use them for a new purpose.
- So just get them out and clean them first.
- Then use any colorful cloth or handkerchief. Cut it into a square or rectangle.
- Fold the sides and mount it on the chopping board. Nail it on the chopping board so that it forms a pocket on the chopping board.
- You can store your cutlery or spatulas in it.
- You can change the cloth when it gets dirty with a new cloth and following the same procedure.
#4. Spoon and fork holder:
Just like I used lentils for a knife block, you can use old spaghetti. If you wish, you can spray paint them. Dry them out and keep them in a jar or glass. And now push in your spoons and forks in it.
